Sending NewslettersUsing Newsletter Studio you can send secure newsletters directly from your own computer. Once you have fixed your settings, sending is easy. Method 1 - Relaying Mail Server (SMTP) (about 90 emails/minute) Method 2 - Direct (SMTP-direct) (about 1200 emails/minute) Email Communication Overview
Mail ServerNormally, you don't have a mail server on your own computer. When you are sending email, your email program (e g Microsoft Outlook) communicates with a mail server on your network which is either provided by the technical staff at your company or by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Outgoing emails (SMTP)SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is the most common protocol used to deliver emails. It is using SMTP that your email is transported from you across the Internet to the recipient. Incoming emails (POP3)POP3 (version 3 of the Post Office Protocol) is one of the most common protocols used to retrieve emails from a mail server. You are probably using POP3 when retrieving emails to your email program on your computer (e g Microsoft Outlook). Two methods of sending email: Relaying Mail Server or SMTP-directYou can always send emails using your regular email server, using it as a relaying server. If your firewall is not blocking port 25, you can use SMTP-direct, which allows for sending emails directly to the recipients mail server without using a relaying server. One advantage using the SMTP-direct method is that it is a significantly faster way of sending out newsletters to a large number of recipients. Spam FiltersTo protect you from spam (junk email), most mail servers have spam filters that aim to filter out spam. To reduce the risk of your newsletter mistakingly being classified as spam the Spam Check function in Newsletter Studio can analyze the contents of your newsletter for you before sending it out to your recipients.
Method 1 - Relaying Mail Server (SMTP)You can always send emails using your regular email server, using it as a relaying server. To send via a relaying server, you need the address of this server, and in some cases a username and password. This information should be provided to you by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) or the technical staff at your company. For more help on which mail server to use, please refer to our Online Support or click the link displayed in the dialog box.
Method 2 - Direct (SMTP-direct)If your firewall (and network) is not blocking port 25, you can use SMTP-direct, which allows for sending emails directly to the recipients mail server without using a relaying server. One advantage using the SMTP-direct method is that it is a significantly faster way of sending out newsletters to a large number of recipients.
If uncertain, you can easily test to see if it is possible to use SMTP-direct. Simply click the "Check"-button to see if you can use this method.
